Lions Sweep Suns in Final Series of Season

DALLAS – Dallas College Mountain View beat Dallas College Cedar Valley 14-13 Saturday to sweep the final three-game series of the season.

It was the Lions' second straight series victory, and they finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak, while winning five of their last six. Mountain View (13-38, 6-24 Dallas Athletic Conference) will take that momentum into the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament this week. It marks the first time since 2019 the Lions will compete in the postseason.

Asher Bates, Greg Willis and Adrien Varela each had three hits and drove in a run for Mountain View in the series finale. Bates doubled twice, and Willis once. Varela also stole two bases.

The Lions scored eight runs in the third inning to take a 10-6 lead. After Cedar Valley (25-29, 9-21) scored three in the top of the sixth to cut it to 11-9, Mountain View picked up one in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the eighth to stretch the lead out to five. The Suns put four runs on the board in the top of the ninth, but Lions reliever Santiago Aravena came on to close the door.

Aravena worked one inning, allowing a hit and a walk, and struck out one in preventing the Suns from scoring the tying run. Middle reliever Julio Garcia (1-2) went four innings, allowing two hits, no runs and no walks, and struck out two to earn the victory. Tyler Pelton also pitched an inning of scoreless relief, not allowing a base runner.

Mountain View outhit Cedar Valley 15-8.

Kortes Howard was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base. Jeremiah Lucero was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Victor Zuniga homered, and Huston Cornish singled, and drove in a run. Ismail Hatamleh had two sacrifice flies.

Cedar Valley's David Chandler went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Ryan Hernandez went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI. Jovan Bernal and Elyjah Anderson each went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
