Garza Named Mountain View Head Baseball Coach

DALLAS – Dallas College Mountain View named Ramon Garza as its head baseball coach.

Garza was the assistant coach last season at Dallas College Eastfield, which went 50-15, finishing as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III runner-up.

"Any time you get the chance to work with these young men to further their careers academically and athletically, it's a great opportunity," Garza said. "It's something I take a lot of pride in. I don't take it for granted. Obviously, it's a really good opportunity to continue what we were doing at Eastfield academically and athletically. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to take over the reigns.

"The first thing I'm excited about is the chance to get to know the players and get to work with them, and help them achieve their goals in their academic and athletic careers."

In his one year as the assistant at Eastfield, the Harvester Bees won the Dallas Athletic Conference regular season title. Garza worked with two NJCAA Division III Second Team All-Americans in pitcher Marcus Peters and first baseman Payton Poole. The Harvesters won the league regular season title with a 25-5 record.

Prior to Eastfield, Garza was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2022-23. The Comets went 25-19 overall, 15-12 in the American Southwest Conference, advancing to the ASC semifinals in the postseason tournament. In 2022, he was the head coach of the Charlottesville Tom Sox, which won the Valley Baseball League championship that season.

Garza played two seasons at UT Dallas in 2021 and 2022 as a middle infielder. He was named an NCAA Division III First Team All-American by D3Baseball.com as a senior. In his junior season, he earned Second Team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings. The Comets won two ASC titles during Garza's playing days at UT Dallas. Before transferring to UT Dallas, Garza was a three-year starting shortstop at Cornell University from 2017-20.

He played for the Charlottesville Tom Sox in 2019, winning the Valley League championship. Garza became the first person to win the Valley League title as a player and a coach. He also played with the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod League in 2018.

"There were two to three good candidates. I just felt Ramon was well spoken in the way he presented himself," Mountain View interim athletic director LeRoi Phillips said. "He's a young guy, coming in from Eastfield, where they have a history of qualifying for the national tournament. He laid out a plan in a 30-page document on what he wanted to implement, and we all liked it. He expressed all the things we like, as coaches, with academics and the baseball side."

Garza's 30-page plan, which he calls C4, comprises four principles he wants to instill in the Lions' program.

"The idea is we're going to excel, and have a championship mentality with four principles in this priority: classroom, competition, community engagement and culture," Garza detailed. "It just builds on another. We can't have the competition without doing the work in the classroom. We can't have a good culture with our team if we're not engaging in the community."
