Lions Outduel Knights on Road

KEENE, Texas -- Dallas College Mountain View's men's basketball team beat host Southwestern Adventist University, 76-71, Thursday.

The Lions (3-4) held off a second half push by the Knights (1-3) to pick up their first road win of the season.

Joshua Smith scored 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting, grabbed six boards, and had two blocks for Mountain View, which shot 54 percent from the floor. Doviyon Bradford had 18 points, five boards, two steals and a block. He was 8 of 12 shooting. Louis Conner had 12 points and nine assists, and Cam Spencer 11 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. It was Spencer's second double-double of the year.

Mountain View led 36-25 after the first half, shooting 16 of 35. The Lions took a 20-13 lead on Smith's layup at the 9:42 mark on an assist from Leshem Darthard. Antoine Silvers' layup with 4:39 to go in the half made it 28-19. Spencer canned a three-pointer1:29 later to extend the lead to 12.

The Knights cut it to 41-38 on Marcel Phifer's jumper 4:02 into the second half to touch off a 13-5 run. Ephraim Viadex's lay-in 1:08 later pulled the Knights within one. Mountain View's Xavier Peyton hit a field goal with 11:42 to play to push the Lions' lead out to 51-46. Conner's triple at the 7:11 mark extended Mountain View's lead to seven. But Southwestern Adventist scored the next five points over the next 55 seconds to pull within two.

Mountain View responded with the next two baskets to cushion the lead back to six. Jason Garcia's three with 1:29 remaining pulled the Knights within 72-69, and Orlando Gooden sank two free throws with 55 seconds left to make it a one-point game. But Smith scored 23 seconds later, the Knights missed two triple tries, and Bradford sank two free throws with five seconds on the clock to put the game away.

Phifer finished with 24 points on 11 of 19 shooting, and Viadex and Garcia each scored 12 for the Knights, who were outrebounded, 45-28.

The Lions will host Jacksonville College 1 p.m. Saturday.
