Lions Golden in South District Semifinal Win

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | DANIEL MARQUEZ GOAL

DALLAS – Daniel Marquez banged in a rebound as time expired in overtime, lifting Dallas College Mountain View men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Dallas College Cedar Valley in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South District semifinal Thursday at Dallas College Richland.

It is the first postseason win in program history.

Mountain View (4-10-3) will meet host Dallas College Richland (11-2) for the championship 6 p.m. Friday. That game will air on TSBN

Marquez sprinted up the right side after Martin Vara Jr's free kick in the closing seconds of the first overtime, and banged a rebound into the back of the net, setting off a jubilant Lions' celebration at the corner flag. It was Marquez's first goal as a Lion.

Vara scored the equalizer in the 67th minute as the Lions erased a two-goal halftime deficit.

Cedar Valley scored a pair of first half goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Elias Prieto slipped a ball into the right corner of the net on a pass from Dylan Placino as the Suns (4-5-2) struck first in the ninth minute. It was Prieto's second goal this season.

Moustapha Kamate used his speed to deposit the Suns' second goal on an assist from Mauricio Gutierrez in the 40th minute. It was Kamate's team-leading fifth goal of the year. Gutierrez's assist gave him a team-best 11 points this season.

Elvin Ramos trimmed Cedar Valley's lead to 2-1 when he scored in the 64th minute. Vara's fourth goal of the season came three minutes later to tie it. Marcelo Torres assisted on both goals. It was Ramos' first goal this year.

Mountain View and Cedar Valley battled to a pair of 1-1 draws during the two regular season matches.

Suns goalkeeper Joel Aldama stopped 12 shots, playing all 100 minutes. Mountain View keeper Abraham Mendoza made five saves, also going wire-to-wire between the posts.

Mendoza ranks seventh in the country with 105 saves.

Mountain View has won its past two games, and is unbeaten in its last five.
