
Velasquez Named DAC Offensive Player of Year, Lions Earn 7 Honors
DALLAS – Dallas College Mountain View men's soccer's Nathaniel Velasquez was chosen as the Dallas Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
Velasquez was joined by Lions teammate Martin Vara Jr as First Team All-DAC selections. Abraham Mendoza, Samuel Bernardion, Isaac Mata and Marcos Ambriz received Second Team All-DAC honors.
A freshman forward from Houston, Velasquez had 10 goals and one assist for a team-leading 21 points. He scored two goals in both of the Lions' wins over Dallas Christian College. Velasquez scored in three straight games. He had two gamewinning goals.
Vara Jr, a freshman forward from Dallas, had six goals and three assists for 15 points. He scored two goals at Connors State College and two at the University of Arkansas Cossatot. Vara Jr also had a goal in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South District semifinal win over Dallas College Cedar Valley.
A freshman goalkeeper from Baytown, Texas, Mendoza won three games and had one tie, while sharing three shutouts. He had 132 saves, which ranked second in the country. He was credited with 27 saves in the South District championship game against Dallas College Richland, and finished with 15 in the two regular season matches with the Thunderducks.
A freshman midfielder from Dallas, Bernardion helped Mountain View post three clean sheets. He also had three assists, including back-to-back games against National Park College and Hill College. Bernardion also had an assist in the 2-1 win over Dallas Christian.
Also a freshman midfielder from Dallas, Mata played a role in the three shutouts.
Ambriz, a sophomore forward from Dallas, scored two goals, including a game winner, and had two assists for six points. His gamewinning goal came in a 2-0 win at Nelson University's Reserves. Ambriz also scored at Connors State. He had an assist in the 2-0 shutout of Dallas Christian.
