Lions Knock Off No. 7 Cedar Valley, 79-67

DALLAS – Dallas College Mountain View's women's basketball team beat seventh-ranked Dallas College Cedar Valley, 79-67, Thursday.

The victory halted Cedar Valley's six-game winning streak, and with a win in its final Dallas Athletic Conference game next week, Mountain View will force a one-game playoff versus the Suns. The postseason playoff game would be played on a neutral court 5 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the site of the Dallas Athletic Conference men's basketball regular season champion. The one-game, winner-take-all playoff will determine which school advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament.

Mountain View (10-7, 2-1 DAC) split with Cedar Valley (14-4, 3-1) this season, each winning on its home court.

The Lions outscored the Suns, 21-8, in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into the fourth. Mountain View outscored Cedar Valley, 24-18, in the fourth to even the season series.

Three Mountain View players finished with double-doubles. Kimberly Cohen scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while shooting 9 of 13. Shaviante Cobb had 15 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, three assists and a block. Devon Sherrod finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals off the bench. Asia Smith scored 14 points, canning four three-point field goals.

Four players scored in double figures for the Suns. Ja-Tauria Miller had 15 points. Shandrea Yeldell and Kate Valle each had 13, and Nakia Brumley 11. Valle grabbed 10 boards for a double-double of her own.

The Lions outrebounded the Suns, 43-37.

Mountain View shot 41.8 percent, going 28 of 67. The Lions hit 15 of 26 free throws. Cedar Valley shot 43.5 percent, going 27 of 62. The Suns were 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Mountain View will wrap up the regular season 6 p.m. next Thursday at Dallas College Richland.
