
No. 15 Mountain View Meets No. 11 Cedar Valley Saturday for District Title
NJCAA DIII South Central District Tournament Central
Dallas College Mountain View's women's basketball team will play Dallas College Cedar Valley 2 p.m. Saturday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central Championship at Dallas College North Lake.
The winner advances to the NJCAA DIII National Tournament March 15-18 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Mountain View (11-7) split with Cedar Valley (15-4) during the regular season. The Lions, who are No. 15 in the NJCAA DIII rankings, beat the Suns, 79-67, at home Feb. 16. Cedar Valley, which owns the No. 11 national ranking, won the first meeting, 75-74 in overtime, in Lancaster, Texas, Jan. 26.
The Lions enter the postseason, having won their last three games.
Devon Sherrod leads Mountain View in scoring (22.0 points per game) and rebounding (9.7 per game), while shooting 41 percent from three-point range. She also averages 4.5 steals and 3.4 assists. Leah Jones is averaging 13.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, a team-best 5.7 steals and three assists. Shaviante Cobb is averaging 12.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.8 steals. Both Cobb and Jones are shooting 47 percent from the field. Kimberly Cohen is averaging 8.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals.
Mountain View is making its return to the postseason after last year's absence. The Lions beat Cedar Valley in the 2020-21 COVID-altered spring season, winning 69-62 in the NJCAA Southwest District semifinals. They fell to Pima Community College, 79-51, in the district championship.
This year's women's district championship game will follow the men's title game at North Lake.
Tickets are $10 for a tournament pass for all games, $5 for adult single session of two games and $3 for students ages 6-18. Children under 6 are free. Dallas College students and employees with a current ID (must present at the gate) are free. Game programs are $2.
