Lions' Season Comes to End in NJCAA DIII Tournament Consolation

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Dallas College Mountain View women's basketball team's season came to an end at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament, following a 68-61 loss to Onondaga Community College (N.Y.) in the consolation round Thursday.

No. 15 in the NJCAA Division III rankings, the Lions went 12-9 this season, matching the program's most wins in school history.

Lions three-year guard Devon Sherrod finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists. She scored 18 points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Kimberly Cohen scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half, and had five rebounds, three steals and a block. She was 4 of 6 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free throw line in the first two periods. Asia Smith had 12 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Zhane Holmes finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Onondaga (17-9). Macey DeOrdio had 15 points and five rebounds, and Hannah Durand 12 points and six boards.

Mountain View shot 21 of 71 from the floor. Onondaga was 25 of 66. The Lions outscored the Lazers, 24-13, in points off turnovers. Onondaga outrebounded Mountain View, 54-40.

The Lions led 11-7 at the 5:12 mark in the first quarter when Smith hit a three-pointer. Onondaga scored the next seven points, McKenzie Barber's bucket with 3:16 to go in the opening quarter to give the Lazers a three-point lead. Laela Harris sank two free throws, and Cohen came up with a steal and a basket a little over a minute later to put Mountain View back on top, 17-14.

Smith buried a 3-pointer 2:29 into the second quarter to push the Lions' lead to five. The Lazers used a 9-0 run to move in front, 29-25. After Sherrod hit a 3 to pull Mountain View with 4:35 remaining in the first half, Onondaga went on an 11-0 run before Sherrod scored to beat the buzzer.

The Lions trailed, 40-30, at the half.

The Lazers stretched their lead to 13 on Sarah Sovocool's jumper with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Sherrod canned a triple at the 1:26 mark as the Lions cut the gap to six. After DeOrdio split a pair at the free throw line, Smith buried another 3 to pull Mountain View within four, 49-45, entering the fourth quarter.

Sherrod scored the first five points in the final period to put the Lions ahead, 50-49. DeOrdio's layup helped the Lazers reclaim a three-point advantage. Layups by Cohen and Sherrod kept the Lions within one. Durand scored to give Onondaga a 58-54 lead with 4:22 to go. Smith's jump shot pulled Mountain View within two.

A three by Ryleigh Endres and a layup by Sovocool pushed the Lazers up seven with 3:05 on the clock. Sherrod's field goal at the 1:23 mark cut it to five, but Endres' layup and two free throws by Deordio made it a 10-point game with eight seconds left. Sherrod canned a 3 to beat the buzzer, but it was too little too late.

Mountain View hit 10 of 33 field goals in the first half. Onondaga was 16 of 38.

Mountain View's Shaviante Cobb finished with 14 rebounds, including nine offensive boards, five assists, two steals and two points.
