Lions Put Lights Out on Suns in First DAC Win

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Mountain View's volleyball team beat Dallas College Cedar Valley, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12, for its first win in Dallas Athletic Conference play this year.

The Lions (7-12, 1-3 DAC) recovered after dropping the first set, and got stronger as the match wore on, putting up a .268 hitting percentage in the second set and .455 clip in the fourth to put the match away.

Samantha Newman pounded a season-high 18 kills, and JaKyra Roberts and Jasmine Phillips each had 12 of Mountain View's 52. Roberts hit a season-best .455, committing just two errors in 22 swings. It was the third straight match she's hit over .300, and the second time this season she's hit over .400.

Jamaya Davis had 33 digs, while Phillips finished with 18, and Zyara Harrison had 13 and Madison Holcomb 10 to go along with 28 assists and three aces. Harrison had 23 assists and one of nine aces in the 6-2 offense. Roberts had two of the Lions' six blocks.

Mountain View put down 17 balls in the second set, and 14 in the fourth in its most productive attacking sets of the match.

The Lions will host Dallas College North Lake 6 p.m. Monday on Pink Out Night to raise awareness for cancer in the final match of the first round of league play. They begin the second half with a trip to Farmers Branch Thursday for a second meeting with Dallas College Brookhaven, whom they dropped a five-set verdict to to begin conference play a week ago.

The regular season runs through Oct. 19. The National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South District Tournament is Oct. 25-28.
