Lions Roar Back for 5-Set Thriller

DALLAS – Dallas College Mountain View's volleyball team won a five-set marathon with Dallas College Richland Monday, claiming the last two sets to pull out an exciting victory, 21-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-20, 15-10.

The Lions (9-15, 2-5 Dallas Athletic Conference) trailed 2-1 in the match after the third set, but grinded out a fourth set victory, and seized control in the decisive set to notch their first five-set match of the year. Mountain View dropped the first three five-setters this season.

Mountain View hit .478 in the second set, putting down 12 kills against one error on 23 attacks in sparkling performance. The Lions held Richland (7-18, 3-4) to a .143 attack rate in that set.

In the pivotal fourth set, the Lions hit .250 with 12 kills and three errors on 36 swings. Richland, which put up a .300 attack rate in the third set, was held to .122 hitting in the fourth as the Lions pulled even. Mountain View was held to .069 hitting on nine kills and seven errors in 29 attacks in Set 3.

The Lions used a six-kill, two-error attack performance in the final set, while holding the Thunderducks to -.056 on three kills and four errors to capture the victory.

Samantha Newman had 12 kills and two blocks, and Jasmine Phillips 12 kills, four aces and 10 digs for the Lions, who were sporting their pink jerseys again. Jamaya Davis had 25 of the Lions' 102 digs, while Abbie Miller had 16. Destinee Wells finished with seven kills and eight digs. JaQuelle Felton and JaKyra Roberts each pounded six kills, and Kendricia Johnson 10 digs and two blocks. Madison Holcomb had three aces. Davis had two of Mountain View's 12 aces.

Richland's Naomi Jemison had 18 kills and a .394 attack percentage. Jersey Glass had 14 kills, and Alexis Wiley 42 assists, 11 digs and one ace. Brooklyn Amador had 18 digs and an ace.

The Lions hit .203 in the match, while Richland had a .154 attack rate.

Mountain View plays at National Junior College Athletic Association Division III No. 1 Dallas College Eastfield (26-0, 7-0) Thursday night.

The NJCAA Division III South District Tournament is Oct. 25-28. The top seed in the DAC will host the postseason tournament.
